The List: Being a Productive Blogger

Being a Productive Blogger - Have a to-do listAs a professional blogger at SPARKON, most of my time is spent on the internet.  I spend time doing research, reading other bloggers, being social with my network, and trying really hard not to get too distracted with the enormous Time Monster, also known as, the Internet.

And there goes another beep notifying me that someone has commented on one of my social profiles and I can’t help but click over to read and/or respond.

Does this sound familiar?

Even on days where I’m being super-productive, I can easily get distracted by the Internet.  Even if it’s not Facebook, I can find a million tiny things to do, to work on, that’s not helping me do what I’m actually supposed to be doing.

For bloggers, this means you have worked on the internet all day long but haven’t finished a single post.  You’ve been too busy doing work that you haven’t accomplished anything. Continue Reading…

Launching SPARKON

Helping teens to visualize their future

For those that have followed my blog for a while, you may know that I was hired by a company in Seattle as a Marketing Manager.  How did I land this totally awesome job?  I started blogging.  Blogging taught me internet marketing.  Those skills landed me a job that is highly desired in this area.

This startup I work for has just went through a rebranding phase and has soft-launched our new software.  Do yourself, and your teenagers, a favor by clicking over to SPARKON and checking out our new website and blog.

What Is SPARKON?

The way I like to explain it is, the technology that’s going to end TGIFridays.  Too many people spend their weekends dreading going to work on Monday.  They then spend their week impatiently waiting for the weekend when they will spend a couple days dreading going back to work the next Monday.

We’re living in a world where 56% of college students drop out.  Of the 44% that graduate from college, only a little over 40% work a job that has anything to do with their degree. That means less than 25% of teenagers that go to college, ever get a career in the field they spend thousands of dollars studying for.  Most college graduates work a job that only requires a GED.

This is a major problem in the world for economic reasons.  But it’s even a bigger problem for teenagers who are staring down their graduation date, scared to death, knowing they have to make a decision on what to do with their life.  If they make the wrong decision, they’re going to end up like 75% of college students do; working a meaningless job that they hate, and praying for the weekend to come quickly. How to setup a WordPress blog for the first time. (Tutorial)

I get a lot of people asking me how to setup a blog.  Most people tend to go with free options like Blogspot or WordPress.com for their first blogs.  However, neither of those are much of an option for a serious blogger.

In my opinion, everyone should host their own WordPress blog if they really want to be in control of the content they create.  Why post it onto a service that, while free, holds all of the control over your content and monetary options?

Another reason people go with free services to setup their first blog is because it seems easier.  They don’t have to worry about domain names, name servers, and setting up hosting.  But all of that stuff is really simple.  So simple in fact, I decided to make a video doing just that.

Check out the tutorial video “how to setup a WordPress blog for the first time.” Continue Reading…

Still living the life in the Emerald City

It’s been a while since I was able to put an updated post on here.  I’ve been slammed with working and, in my spare time, my time has has been spent trying to get a church going here in Seattle.

My job is marketing for a startup, mainly blogging about education, teens, and motivating them to learn.  It’s a blast.  My passion is starting a church in Seattle, which is basically the same thing as my job in that they are startups.  They take a lot of time and energy and it seems like you’re never catching up on everything that needs to be done.

Right now I’m working on a marketing plan, which I should have completed by this week.  I’m sitting in a Starbucks checking the last bit of stats for the evening before I head off to my other startup, Refuge Church of Seattle.

There is another neighboring church that is feeding needy people in downtown Seattle, about 5 blocks from our apartment tonight.  I’m going to go help them and see if I can start building relationships with people that need to hear the gospel.

Future plans for WeAreProBloggers.com

I have no intention of letting this blog go to waste.  I’m constantly learning new things about blogging, internet marketing, and branding.  It’s one giant perk of my job to learn how to market a business from the ground up.  It’s amazing and I’m determined to become known as a growth-hacker.

As time goes on, I will eventually start sharing the things I learn on this blog. It should become pretty valuable over time as I learn more and more.  I look forward to starting this blog back up.

In the meantime you can catch up to what I’m doing at a few sites:

To Start A Church: Reaching Seattle

This is my blog about the experiences of starting a church.  It’s an adventure to be sure.  It’s both exhilarating and fun, while being entirely frightening at the same time.  It’s glorious and pride swallowing work at the same time.  I wouldn’t prefer to do anything else with my life.  God knew what He was doing when He picked me out.  At least, on my side.  I know I don’t have what it takes to be a church planter, but then again, I don’t have to be.

Ryan Douglas Scott

This is my personal blog.  It’s last on the list of anything I do.  I should spend more time on it but, I just don;t have it to spend.  After a while, I hate computers.  And I’m a computer nerd so that’s saying a lot.

Refuge Church of Seattle

This is where my heart is. God is doing amazing things and it’s just exciting to be able to sit back and watch.  I’m really excited to see what He does in the future.  I hope to make sure I’m there when it all explodes.   Right now we are having weekly Bible Studies in Starbucks and doing one online as well.

Next step is to start one in our apartment building.  That’s going to be fun.

Until we meet again on this lagging blog, I hope you’ll check out the other ones I’ve been working on.

Keep on blogging and learning.  It pays off1

One Secret to a Successful Blog to Rule Them All

Okay, I had to get a little Lord of the Rings in there.

I haven’t written on this blog in a long while.  One major reason is because now I blog for a living at a dream job.  I used my experience writing this blog to educate myself enough to get a job that I absolutely love.  And what do I do all day long? I blog, mostly.

I have learned something new since dipping my toe into the startup culture here in Seattle.  It’s pure gold for a blogger and I can’t believe I haven’t read it somewhere before.  But this secret will take your writers block away as well as bring credibility to your blog.

Successful blogs all do this, and I don’t even think most of them do it on purpose.  For some bloggers, it’s just a natural thing they do.  But for us that weren’t born with a blog and or a typewriter on our highchair, this secret is something we have to discover and do on purpose.  But, if you do it, you will find your blog gain readers, and mentions on some more established blogs. How Blogging Landed Me a Dream Job

So we started out this blog with a dream.  We wanted to make blogging our full-time income.  We started this website claiming that future for ourselves and delving into the art of blogging.  And, it worked like a charm!

No, this blog is not paying my bills.  Directly, that is.  But as I write this I am currently employed, for the most part, to use my skills in blogging.

You can checkout my blogging now at www.empower.me, our parent blog and our teen blog.

Let me tell you the story

We started swimming in the world of blogging for the purpose of trading boring, dead-end jobs for something more fulfilling.  We wanted this blog, and a few others, to take over our income so we could work full-time, blogging.  And that has happened, somewhat.

We saw our earnings jump in one year from averaging around $5 per month in earnings from our websites to making well over $20 per month.  But along the way we learned a lot more than just growing our ad revenue.

We learned the art of marketing from a new perspective.  I had been involved in marketing for quite a few years.  However, the idea of flat-out internet marketing wasn’t something that I spent a lot of time developing.

Until I started this blog.

In the last year I not only learned quite a bit about WordPress, but also the on-site SEO practices to make google love your site.  We learned that there are all kinds of things you can do to increase your visibility on the internet.  And through a lot of reading and research, the field of internet marketing began to make sense.

Then, the news came that we would be moving to Seattle, WA.  A surprise to all of us, but that’s the life of a minister.  Sometimes, God just has His own way of doing things.

So, we find ourselves in Seattle and me looking for a job.

The Job Hunt

I put in quite a few resume’s in the marketing field.  I was able to get 3 interviews.  The first, in person at a great startup in downtown Seattle.  But, the interview did not go well as I was totally unprepared for everything they asked me.

The second was over the phone with a local charity.  They were looking for a… wait for it… blogger!  Not only that, but a Christian blogger.  I thought I couldn’t miss with this one!  Turns out, I wasn’t what they wanted.

Now, the third interview.  I was 20 minutes late because I got my schedule mixed up.  However, the interviewer was kind enough to wait on me.  Turns out, it was the CEO of the company.

As I walked in and made an awkward joke about making great first-impressions, he asked me what I was looking for in a job.  I told him I wanted three things: First, I wanted something that I could own and be passionate about; Second, I wanted something I could settle into and become a part of, rather than just punching a clock and looking for other jobs; Third, I wanted something that I could be creative with.

He really liked that answer and he asked me one question.  He said, “have you done any blogging?”  That lit up the excitement in me that is passionate about blogging.

As he explained the company, and what the position would be doing, I found that I could just about tell him what needed to be done before he got to that point.  I was spitting out ideas and having a lot of fun.  And all of the things I was talking about I learned blogging!

3 days later, I was in the office sitting across the conference table as I was given the first look at the branding guidelines of this company.  That afternoon I received a simple e-mail, “ryan, we want to formally offer you the position, can you start on Monday?”

75% of my job description is blogging.  And that’s not even the best news… listen to the blessings of God in this….

One of the highly desirable jobs in this area is to be a founding team member of a startup.  Remember the stories of the 8 people who are now extremely rich because of Facebook?  Everyone wants in on the ground floor of a startup.

You guessed it, I am a founding member of a real startup.  It’s been launched for about 3 months and is already realeasing the second version of their system.  I get to blog about keeping kids in school.  I get to do the internet marketing that I have become passionate about over the last few months.  I get paid really well for doing it.  And, If everything works out like it’s projected to, in a few years I’ll be able to look at this growing company that I helped to build.

I would never have made it past the awkward moment in Starbucks with a startup CEO if I hadn’t spent the last year learning the art of blogging.

You should start learning it now!  Maybe I’ll have my own startup one day and hire some bloggers for my marketing team.  It could be you!  Start blogging!

We Survived!

The live album is over and the producing and master is done!  To make matters even more stressful, I accidentally deleted some very important audio files used in the final mix.  Thank goodness we were able to recover the damage before it destroyed the album and my brain!

Now with that out of the way, my life is coming back to normal.  I will have time now to write a lot of posts that have been storing up in my brain so we are about to have a lot of good stuff coming your way.

A Quick Update

While blogging is not paying all of our bills, it sure did save our lives!  A large bill was coming due and we didn’t have enough money to pay it.  However, Brittani received a check from her blog ads and, a couple days later, our second Google check arrived with enough to cover it!

You can check out the album that I produced, and Brittani wrote 9 songs for below!

Where We’ve Been

Brittani and Ryan

My last post was July 29th, which means that I have gone more than one week without a single post!  How shameful of me!

These last couple of weeks actually have been extremely packed with things to accomplish and the next month doesn’t look any better.  We’ve got a lot of things on the calendar plus work piling up at the end of summer has become a perfect storm with little time to do the things I want to do, like blog.

What’s Up With Us

Last week we took off to Little Rock Arkansas for a Music Conference at the First Pentecostal Church.  If you are driving through little rock on I-40 you will see this church on the north side of the road.  It used to be a huge church until they built their new sanctuary and now it looks like a huge church sitting next to an absolutely monster of a church building.

Bible College Buddies

Bible College Buddies: Me, Michael, Brian (Pinky), and Cory

We had an absolutely amazing time and I got to visit with a few friends from Bible College that I hadn’t seen in a very long time.  And I also got to hear a very talented friend, Elaina Angel, sing “Heaven For Me.” (video below)  She just released her first album so if you would like to buy it hit me up on Twitter and I can give you purchasing instructions.

Knowing that we were going to be away for a few days it was hectic getting all of my scheduled jobs completed before I left town.

I was planning on blogging the entire time but I didn’t realize that my wife had registered me for classes as well.  So I spent my relaxing time learning instead of playing on my blogs all day.  My sister will be angry when she finds out that I didn’t build her blog for her like I was planning to do.

Now we’re back home but the jobs I put off for the last few days are now all piled up this week.  On top of that, my wife has talked me into one of the scariest projects we have ever tried to do.  We are fixing to record a live worship album at our church at the end of this month.

It has fallen on me to use everything I have learned to produce the album, be the sound engineer, and make sure the sound system is in top working order in time for the concert. This means sometimes in the next two weeks, between jobs, we are going to completely uninstall and reinstall the church’s sound system from scratch.

So you might not see much of me in terms of twitter and blogging for the next few weeks.  I will try and get around to adding posts as much as possible but, if you see a downtime, you will know why.

Earning With Mirco-Niche Sites: Update 4

Earning With Micro-Niche Sites

Site #3: Contributing a Little!

(Part of the Case Study: Earning With Micro-Niche Websites series)

It’s been a while since I posted on this blog.  I have been working way too much trying to meet the demands of the bill collectors.  I can’t wait until this whole journey reaches its goals.  I’m ready to be paying my bills, working from home, being my own boss, and doing it all from blogging.

This update is going to be short and to the point.  I don’t have a lot of time to write for now but I wanted to let everyone know that the Micro Niche site experiment is still underway.

I have seen success and failure in this venture so far.  One site is still clinging to the front page of google and generating a little bit of income in its first month.  Another site is completely off the reservation and not even ranking anymore.  A third site, which I hadn’t mentioned before is starting to contribute to our earnings.  And 2 more sites are in the development stages to join these three.

In total, soon, I will have 5 micro niche sites focused on earning Adsense bucks.  Let’s check out the progress so far: Continue Reading…

Micro Niche Site Journey: Update 3

Micro Niche Site Update(Part of the Case Study: Earning With Micro-Niche Websites series)

So it’s been a few days since I added an update to our micro niche site journey.  My wife and I have spent the last week at a church conference in middle Tennessee so it’s been a week or so since I have done much of anything with any of our websites.

With that being said, our traffic is down on just about all of our sites. Except for our micro-niche sites!  Amazing isn’t it.  This making money blog traffic has been sporadic, especially over the last couple of weeks where church activities have taken away my blogging time.

Without the extra time spent creating content and marketing it, the traffic amount fell.  However, the traffic for the micro niche sites have actually grown without us doing anything with them.

Why?  Because they are ranking very high for their keywords which means that traffic is finding them with their current content.

While our traffic has fallen this month with the two church camps, our adsense earnings have continued going up.  For the last 4 months, we have had a steady increase in earnings per month.  As I continue to scale into more web properties we are seeing the earnings go up.  As they age and climb higher in the SERPS, I expect those sites that are solely for generating income will continue to do that.

Hopefully, in the next few months, we will be on our way to making our first goal, which is to pay our rent by working online. Continue Reading…
